UPDATE: Colton Maita has made an explosive return to the field, making headlines with two key interceptions in Neuqua Valley’s thrilling 21-13 victory over rival Waubonsie Valley on September 29, 2023. After facing a series of serious injuries, including a fractured back that sidelined him for the entire 2024 football season, Maita’s determination and versatility shone brightly last night.
The junior athlete was initially set to become Neuqua Valley’s starting quarterback, a role he envisioned after leading his sophomore team in prior seasons. However, a devastating back injury from a spring 2024 baseball game derailed those plans. “I fractured my back, sat out for two to three months, and then fractured it again,” Maita recounted, explaining how the injuries kept him off the field last year as the Wildcats struggled to a 2-7 record.
Despite the setback, Maita’s resilience has propelled him back into action, although not in the position he had hoped for. Neuqua Valley Coach Bill Ellinghaus opted for junior Drake Mennecke as the starting quarterback, leading Maita to switch to cornerback. “He’s too good of an athlete to keep off the field,” Ellinghaus stated, highlighting Maita’s adaptability and skill.
Responding to the change with positivity, Maita embraced his new role and delivered a performance that left fans and teammates buzzing. He made both interceptions, crucial in setting the tone for Neuqua Valley’s victory. Maita’s first came at Waubonsie Valley’s 31-yard line, setting up a touchdown run by senior running back Andrew Barkley that extended the Wildcats’ lead to 14-0.
Barkley, who rushed for 183 yards and two touchdowns, expressed his excitement: “Boy, am I glad he switched to defense! Those interceptions just set us up for perfect opportunities to score.” Maita didn’t stop there; he also recorded a sack and nearly snagged a third interception in the closing moments of the game.
Maita’s ability to excel in a new position so quickly stems from his deep understanding of the game. “He understands what the quarterback is trying to do, so he always puts himself in a good spot,” Coach Ellinghaus explained, underscoring Maita’s football IQ as a significant asset.
Maita acknowledged the support he received from his teammates and coaches as pivotal in his smooth transition. “The leaders on the team took me under their wing, and the coaches got us prepared. It was an adrenaline rush, flying around, all 11 men to the ball,” he shared, reflecting on his exhilarating return to competitive play.
Despite his success on defense, Maita harbors hopes of returning to the quarterback position. “I still take some reps at quarterback in practice. In case anything ever happens, I’ll be ready to go,” he affirmed.
As Neuqua Valley looks to build on this momentum, Maita’s journey from adversity to triumph serves as an inspiring testament to determination and teamwork. Fans are eagerly watching to see how this talented athlete continues to impact the Wildcats’ season.
