Dave Young, the Colorado State Treasurer, announced on Friday morning that he is withdrawing from the race for the highly competitive 8th Congressional District. This decision narrows the Democratic field ahead of the upcoming primary elections scheduled for June. Young cited a family member’s “serious health situation” as the primary reason for his departure from the congressional race.
“My family must come first, and stepping back from this race to care for my family, as well as continuing to fulfill my duties as state treasurer, is the responsible choice,” Young stated in an official announcement. His exit leaves three Democratic candidates vying for the nomination to challenge Republican U.S. Representative Gabe Evans in the forthcoming general election.
The remaining candidates include State Representative Manny Rutinel, who has a significant fundraising advantage, having raised over $2 million. This amount is double that of the next closest candidate. State Representative Shannon Bird has recently declared her intention to resign from her legislative position to focus entirely on her congressional campaign. Additionally, Evan Munsing, a Marine veteran, is also competing for the Democratic nomination.
Impact of Young’s Withdrawal on the Race
The 8th Congressional District, which encompasses areas from the northern suburbs of Denver to Greeley, was designed to be one of the most competitive districts in the United States. Its significance is heightened as it could play a crucial role in determining which political party controls the House of Representatives in 2027.
Gabe Evans, who successfully unseated Democrat Yadira Caraveo in the 2024 elections, aims to make history by being the first individual re-elected to represent this newly created district, which was established following the 2020 census.
As the race intensifies, the remaining Democratic candidates will need to ramp up their efforts to gain traction among voters. The political landscape will continue to evolve as candidates adjust their strategies in response to Young’s departure and the shifting dynamics of the race.
