UPDATE: A groundbreaking summit on health, artificial intelligence, and technology is currently underway at the University of Pittsburgh, co-hosted with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). The event, titled “Forging the Future: The Intersection of Health, AI and Tech,” brings together leading experts from academia, industry, and government to discuss how emerging technologies are transforming healthcare.
The summit, organized in collaboration with the Council on Competitiveness and the Global Federation of Competitiveness Councils (GFCC), emphasizes Pittsburgh’s role as a vital hub for innovation. Both CMU President Farnam Jahanian and Pitt Chancellor Joan Gabel delivered a joint welcome, highlighting the city’s evolution into a center for education, medicine, and technology.
“Pittsburgh’s renaissance over the last two decades has been driven by synergy between private and public sectors alongside our academic institutions,” Jahanian stated. He underscored the critical role of university-led research in enhancing productivity and health outcomes, noting CMU’s introduction of the first undergraduate degree in AI in 2018.
The summit features a series of panels, with Jahanian discussing the profound impact of AI on education. He projected, “Within the next 10 years, we will see a fundamental shift in how we teach and learn, improving outcomes for students of all ages.”
Later, Theresa Mayer, CMU’s Vice President for Research, joined international leaders to discuss sustainable growth through tech-driven collaboration. Mayer highlighted Pittsburgh’s rich manufacturing history and natural resources, stating, “[Pittsburgh has] incredible natural resources in this region: the energy and the water, which are critical for U.S. manufacturing growth.”
In a notable moment, Mayer referenced a major energy and AI summit held at CMU in July 2023, where over 40 CEOs and five cabinet secretaries participated, leading to an announcement of over $90 billion in investments for the region.
During a dynamic lunch panel, Marsha Lovett, CMU’s Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning Innovation, stressed the necessity of agile education systems that integrate AI effectively. She stated, “Integrating AI into education means continuously monitoring curricula and ensuring they meet the evolving needs of students.”
As the summit progresses, attendees are eager to learn about the latest advancements and strategies for leveraging AI in healthcare. The discussions could shape the future of education and innovation, impacting communities both locally and globally.
