Choreographer Kelli Barclay is set to bring her vision of “White Christmas” to the Goodspeed Opera House from November 14 to December 28, 2023. Having previously contributed to nearly a dozen productions at Goodspeed, Barclay’s deep connection to this musical is both personal and professional, marking a significant milestone in her career.
Barclay has a rich history with Goodspeed, having served as the associate choreographer for shows like “Lucky in the Rain” in 1997, “George M!” in 2000, and “The Will Rogers Follies” in 2018. Notably, she choreographed the acclaimed tap dance finale in “Anything Goes” during 2016. Now, she steps into the role of choreographer for “White Christmas,” a production close to her heart. She was also the associate choreographer and dance captain for the original Broadway version in 2009.
Artistic director Donna Lynn Hilton invited Barclay to lead this project after a previous show, a stage adaptation of “Mrs. Santa Clause,” was canceled. “Donna Lynn said, ‘I want you to have your own White Christmas,’” Barclay recalled, expressing gratitude for the opportunity. She collaborates with director Hunter Foster, known for his successful holiday productions at Goodspeed, including “A Christmas Story.”
Barclay acknowledged the challenges of a shortened preparation period due to the schedule change. “We had to hustle,” she stated, but expressed confidence in Foster’s direction. “He’s a great director,” she added.
The stage adaptation of “White Christmas,” which premiered in 2000 after the beloved 1954 film, brings a fresh perspective to the classic story. The musical features iconic songs by Irving Berlin, including “Let Yourself Go,” “Blue Skies,” and “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm.” Despite its roots in the film, the stage version diverges significantly. “When people think of the movie, they might think of the song ‘Choreography,’ which is not in this musical,” Barclay explained. Instead, the act one finale showcases “Blue Skies,” a number not found in the original film.
Audience reactions have been overwhelmingly positive. Barclay noted that viewers embrace the differences between the film and stage adaptations. “Nobody ever says ‘That wasn’t in the movie!’” she said. The live performances and orchestrations breathe new life into the production, creating an engaging atmosphere. “Can you get any better than dancing in the snow?” she asked, highlighting the enchanting nature of the show.
Working within the constraints of the Goodspeed Opera House stage presents unique challenges, yet Barclay’s extensive experience on this intimate venue allows her to navigate these limitations effectively. “I have my own way of working around that,” she remarked, emphasizing the importance of helping dancers connect physically with the choreography. “It can be astounding,” she stated.
The cast for this production includes Omar Lopez-Cepero, Lauren Nicole Chapman, Clyde Alves, and Jonaly Saxer, among others. This diverse ensemble is poised to deliver an engaging performance, adding depth to the classic tale.
Barclay views this rendition of “White Christmas” not as a radical reinterpretation but as the culmination of her accumulated experience. “We’re not reinventing the wheel here,” she said. “We’re making it fit the Goodspeed stage and putting our own stamp on it.” Her approach aims to honor the original while adapting it for contemporary audiences.
“This is just a joy,” Barclay expressed, reflecting on the festive spirit that permeates the production. With her dreams of a “White Christmas” finally coming to fruition, she describes the show as “a little jewel box of joy fulfilled.”
