The Chico State men’s and women’s basketball teams both achieved thrilling victories against Cal State Los Angeles on March 1, 2024, at Acker Gym in Chico. The women’s team improved its record to 9-2 overall and 5-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with a close 60-57 win, while the men’s team triumphed 70-69, overcoming a halftime deficit.
The women’s game began with Chico State falling behind early, trailing 9-2 within the first two minutes. However, the Wildcats responded with a strong run, taking a 13-12 lead with just under three minutes remaining in the first quarter. By the end of the first quarter, they had pushed ahead to a 15-13 advantage.
Despite maintaining the lead for much of the game, the Wildcats faced a challenge as Cal State LA reclaimed the advantage, leading 53-46 entering the final quarter. In a remarkable turnaround, Chico State outscored their opponents 14-4 in the fourth quarter, sealing the victory.
Madison Parry was instrumental in the win, leading the Wildcats with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Other notable contributions came from Nseije Ortiz, who scored 12 points, and Meadow Aragon, who added nine points and 12 rebounds. As a team, Chico State dominated the boards, out-rebounding Cal State LA 45-30.
The Wildcats will look to continue their winning streak when they face Cal State Dominguez Hills at 1 p.m. on March 2, 2024.
In the men’s game, Jeremiah Dargan provided a thrilling finish with a layup nine seconds before the final buzzer, completing a comeback for the Wildcats. At halftime, Chico State was down 45-38, but they rallied in the second half, outscoring Cal State LA 32-24 to secure the victory.
Dargan led the team with an impressive 23 points. Additional contributions came from Chris Holley, who recorded 13 points, six rebounds, and five assists, and Cortevious Taylor, who achieved a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Chico State’s men’s team now holds a record of 5-5 overall and 3-2 in the CCAA. The Wildcats will also compete against Cal State Dominguez Hills on March 2, 2024, with the game scheduled for 3 p.m.
