The City Council of Chandler has officially appointed John Pombier as the city manager, a role he will hold through June 2027. Pombier has been serving as the acting city manager since July 2023 and has now received formal approval from the council to continue in this position.
In a statement following his appointment, Pombier expressed his appreciation for the community. “I’ve always admired the greatness of Chandler and these past few months have produced first-hand experiences demonstrating why our community is such a special place,” he said, as noted in the city’s official announcement.
Pombier brings over two decades of public service experience to his new role. Prior to joining Chandler, he enjoyed a distinguished career with the City of Mesa, where he spent 19 years, including 11 years as assistant city manager. His background also includes a tenure as city prosecutor and time spent at the Arizona Governor’s Office, where he directed initiatives addressing family violence.
Responsibilities and Vision for Chandler’s Future
As city manager, Pombier will oversee the daily operations of Chandler and implement policies approved by the City Council. This position is one of four key roles, alongside the city attorney, city clerk, and presiding magistrate, that are directly appointed by the council.
Pombier holds a law degree from Arizona State University and an undergraduate degree in business administration from the University of Michigan. His extensive experience and educational background position him well to lead the city in addressing the needs of its growing population and businesses.
Chandler has seen significant growth in recent years, and Pombier will be tasked with navigating the challenges and opportunities that come with this development. His leadership will be crucial in shaping policies that support both economic growth and the well-being of the community.
The city council’s decision reflects confidence in Pombier’s ability to lead effectively. His familiarity with the city, combined with his proven track record in public service, positions him to make a lasting impact on Chandler’s future.
