Dozens of community members gathered at Whitmore Park in Ceres, California, on March 5, 2024, to honor the memory of 14-year-old Amari Peterson. Amari was tragically killed in a mass shooting in nearby Stockton nearly two weeks earlier. The vigil, organized by the Ceres Jr. Bulldogs football league, provided a space for friends, family, and supporters to come together in remembrance and grief.
As the evening unfolded, emotions ran high among attendees. Many embraced one another in tears, lighting candles as they prayed for Amari and his family. Nicknamed “Ferari Mari,” Amari was remembered fondly by his former football coaches, who shared heartfelt memories during the vigil.
“This tragic event is messed up. He was a wonderful kid, a special kid, and a great athlete,” said Umar Muriset, one of Amari’s coaches. The profound loss resonated throughout the crowd, highlighting the impact of gun violence on young lives.
Coach Joe Estrada, who played a key role in organizing the vigil, expressed the deep sorrow felt by the community. “Any time a child loses his life to violence, whether he’s with our team or not, it hurts. He doesn’t have the opportunity to go to high school or live his life,” Estrada stated, referring to Amari’s bright future that was tragically cut short.

As the community mourned, calls for action and justice echoed among the gathered crowd. “We need to come together as a community, put the guns down, and love each other,” Estrada added.
In response to the tragedy, the Ceres Jr. Bulldogs are raising funds to support Amari’s family. Additionally, the league plans to honor him by featuring his jersey number, 14, on uniforms for the upcoming season, ensuring that his memory continues to inspire young athletes in the area.
