Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Catherine Russell is set to perform at the Blue Llama Jazz Club in Ann Arbor on October 10, 2023. This concert marks her first appearance in the city in approximately 15 years and her debut at this popular venue. Russell, who hails from a prominent jazz lineage, is known for her versatility and engaging performances.

Born to musician parents, her father, the late Luis Russell, served as a long-time musical director for Louis Armstrong, while her mother, Carline Ray, made her mark as a vocalist and guitarist. Growing up in a household filled with music, Russell was exposed to a wide array of genres, from 1920s jazz to the Great American Songbook, shaping her unique sound and artistic vision.

In her upcoming performance, Russell plans to showcase a blend of recorded and unreleased songs, combining elements of jazz and blues from different eras. “I always do a mix of some songs I’ve recorded, some that I haven’t recorded – things that I might potentially record,” she shared. This approach not only keeps the performance fresh but also ensures a lively atmosphere for both the band and the audience.

Catherine Russell initially pursued a career as a dancer, studying at the iconic Katherine Dunham dance academy. It was not until later in her life that she discovered her passion for singing. “I didn’t know I wanted to sing until much later,” she explained. Her first significant experience as a vocalist came while singing in a choir led by Reverend Daryl Coley, who encouraged her to take on lead roles.

Following her graduation from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Russell collaborated with a diverse range of artists, including David Bowie, Steely Dan, and Paul Simon. Over her career, she has lent her voice to more than 200 albums. It wasn’t until 2006 that she released her debut album as a solo jazz artist, receiving critical acclaim and establishing her presence in the music industry.

Russell is excited to return to Ann Arbor, expressing her enthusiasm for the performance. “I’m really looking forward to it; I’ve missed playing in that town for a long time. I’m grateful for the opportunity,” she said. Accompanied by her long-time musical director and guitarist Matt Munisteri, along with pianist Ben Paterson and bassist Tal Ronen, Russell promises a night filled with captivating music.
