“Imaginary Playerz” features a sample from Jay-Z’s iconic track, “Imaginary Players,” from his 1997 album In My Lifetime, Vol. 1. In a session on X Spaces, she expressed her excitement, stating, “If he didn’t approve it, I probably wouldn’t even feel a certain type of way neither, because it’s like, ‘OK, maybe I just had to come a little bit harder.’ But I’m glad that I came hard and he loved it.”
The announcement of the single was made on August 11, accompanied by luxurious cover art showcasing Cardi in a white fur coat, seated on the hood of a matching Rolls-Royce. In her Instagram post, she teased, “Just a lil taste of the drama. IMAGINARY PLAYERZ THIS FRIDAY.”
