A campaign has been initiated to honor the late community advocate Myrna Wetzel with a memorial plaque at Candy Cane Park, where she dedicated much of her time and effort. Longtime friend Lori Otterbeck has launched a GoFundMe campaign aiming to raise $3,000 for the plaque, which will commemorate Wetzel’s contributions to the park and the community. As of Thursday, the campaign has successfully raised $1,319.
The plaque’s installation is scheduled for November 16, a date the city will officially recognize as Myrna Wetzel Day. Otterbeck expressed the desire to give back to Wetzel, saying, “We want to acknowledge her for her efforts through the years. She was a huge contributor to getting Candy Cane Park remodeled.” The plaque will be placed beneath a large tree near the park’s sign and will feature a photograph of Wetzel alongside her chihuahua, Blessed.
Wetzel was known for her tireless advocacy, including her efforts to replace the playground equipment at Candy Cane Park. She often rallied for community improvements, famously walking the park with a sign advocating for the playground’s renovation. Her persistence paid off in 2019, when the park’s playground was finally replaced, and Wetzel was present to cut the ribbon at the grand opening. She passed away in June of this year.
Otterbeck emphasized the importance of recognizing community advocates, stating, “We want people to know if you give back to your community, you’ll be recognized. I think everyone will enjoy it.” Wetzel’s advocacy did not end with the playground; she was actively involved in other community causes, including a campaign to install a stop sign at the intersection of Cross and Lockeford streets before her passing.
“Myrna touched everybody in Lodi,” Otterbeck remarked. “She was always an advocate for the betterment of the community, and it’s important to acknowledge people who do so much work for their cities.” Those wishing to contribute to the memorial plaque can do so by visiting the GoFundMe page at tinyurl.com/WetzelPlaque.
