URGENT UPDATE: California is bracing for a dramatic weather shift this week, with “sauna-like conditions” and thunderstorms expected to impact many regions. The National Weather Service warns that after a period of pleasant fall-like days, the humidity will surge, making conditions uncomfortable for residents.

Beginning mid-week, a significant increase of monsoonal moisture from the south will lead to warmer overnight temperatures and rising humidity. By Tuesday and Wednesday, inland valleys like Paso Robles could see highs soaring to between 90 degrees and the low 100s. Coastal areas will experience milder temperatures, climbing into the mid-80s, while beaches will remain cooler, with readings from the high 60s to low 70s.

The humidity will create a muggy atmosphere across much of the state. Fog is expected along the coast Tuesday and Wednesday due to the marine layer, bringing pockets of mist in the mornings.

As the week progresses, the chances of thunderstorms will increase significantly. The National Weather Service projects that by Thursday and Friday, the probability of thunderstorms could rise to between 10% and 35%, particularly in mountainous and desert areas. Residents should prepare for potential rain showers and gusty winds as early as Wednesday.

“Thunderstorm chances increase as more moisture moves in, producing wetter storms,”

officials noted. The conditions could lead to dry lightning and erratic winds, escalating the risk of fire starts. Furthermore, the potential for brief heavy downpours and flooding will extend through the weekend.

As summer officially gives way to autumn on September 22, 2023, the state will experience a notable transition. The upcoming autumn equinox will see the sun directly over the equator, marking a day of nearly equal daylight and darkness.

Residents are urged to stay updated on the developing weather conditions and prepare for potential impacts. With the likelihood of thunderstorms and rising humidity, this week could prove uncomfortable and hazardous for many in California. Stay tuned for further updates.
