A bus driver from Newark, Leigh Barker, has been recognized as the ‘Star of the Month’ for his exceptional efforts in promoting mental health awareness among colleagues and the wider community. Employed by Stagecoach East Midlands, Barker received a commendation certificate along with a £100 Love2Shop voucher for his initiative in supporting the charity Andy’s Man Club.

The recognition followed several nominations from his peers, highlighting Barker’s commitment to mental health advocacy. One nomination described his work in raising awareness as crucial, noting his efforts to ensure the topic remains a priority for staff and the community. Barker’s initiative included securing the branding of two buses to promote the message of Andy’s Man Club, emphasizing that it is #ITSOKAYTOTALK.

Impacting Mental Health Conversations

Another colleague praised Barker’s outstanding contributions, stating, “He has done absolutely outstanding work promoting men’s mental health through his work with Andy’s Man Club. Well done, Leigh.” This sentiment reflects the growing importance of mental health discussions, particularly among men, who often face stigma surrounding these issues.

In early 2025, Stagecoach East Midlands took a significant step by wrapping two of its vehicles in the branding of Andy’s Man Club. The charity is dedicated to providing free peer-to-peer support groups across the UK and online, aiming to eliminate the stigma surrounding men’s mental health and to foster open conversations.

Leadership Praise and Community Values

Matt Cranwell, managing director of Stagecoach East Midlands, expressed pride in Barker’s efforts. He acknowledged that Barker has worked diligently to promote mental health awareness, motivating others to engage with the topic and seek support when needed. Cranwell stated, “Leigh’s actions also led to the partnership Stagecoach now has with Andy’s Man Club – a partnership that other Stagecoach operating companies are also wanting to get involved with.”

This commendation not only recognizes individual achievement but also aligns with Stagecoach’s core values of community support and collaboration. Cranwell added, “These commendations reflect the values that we strive to uphold, like ‘we are stronger together’ and ‘we support communities’, and Leigh has shown that he lives these values every day.”

Barker’s recognition as ‘Star of the Month’ serves as an inspiration for others in the industry, highlighting the vital role that mental health awareness plays in the workplace and beyond. His commitment to promoting a culture of open dialogue and support is a model for others aiming to make a difference in their communities.
