UPDATE: A Burlington man, Daniel Dobson, is pursuing a staggering $3.5 million lawsuit against Casino Rama and local authorities following an arrest that left him physically injured and financially devastated. The lawsuit, filed after the prosecution against him was halted in April 2023, stems from a December 2022 incident where Dobson claims he was the victim of excessive force and false arrest.

According to local news outlet Barrie Today, Dobson, aged 41, asserts he was assaulted by security personnel and officers during the incident. He was initially charged with eight counts, including assault and resisting arrest. However, Justice A.M. Nichols of the Ontario Court of Justice ruled that the lengthy delay in the prosecution violated Dobson’s Charter rights, effectively stopping the case against him on April 7, 2023.

The incident at Casino Rama has taken a toll on Dobson, who reports ongoing pain and emotional distress. He stated, “This has been a nightmare,” highlighting the $25,000 he spent preparing his defense against what he claims are fabricated allegations. Dobson contends that he was quietly leaving the casino when security approached him, leading to a violent confrontation where he suffered concussions and injuries to his arm and wrist.

In his lawsuit, Dobson accuses Casino Rama, its parent company Gateway Casinos and Entertainment, and the Rama Police Service of negligence, excessive force, and malicious prosecution. He has also filed a complaint against a police constable, alleging abusive treatment during his arrest, though that complaint was dismissed after an internal review cleared the officer of misconduct.

Despite the legal battle, Dobson continues to seek accountability. “It’s not just about the money; it’s about justice,” he stressed, emphasizing the need for an apology and acknowledgment of the ordeal he endured. As the situation develops, the police have yet to publicly respond to the allegations, while Casino Rama has filed a defense against the lawsuit.

This urgent case raises significant questions about the treatment of individuals in detention and the accountability of law enforcement and security personnel. With the lawsuit now underway, many are watching closely to see how the courts will respond to Dobson’s claims and what implications this case may have for similar situations in the future.
