UPDATE: The Buffalo Bills’ training camp in Pittsford, New York has taken a dramatic turn as injuries and standout performances emerge just days before the preseason begins. Tyrell Shavers, a promising wide receiver, suffered a right ankle injury during practice today, raising concerns about his status as the team prepares for the August 7 preseason opener.
Shavers, who was vying for a spot on the 53-man roster, made a touchdown catch despite being covered by rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston. After the play, he was visibly in pain and was carted off the field. Thankfully, sources confirm he is “doing fine” with a low ankle sprain.
“It’s just us competing. I’m not trying to allow the receiver to catch the ball,” Hairston said about the play.
In addition to Shavers, the team is dealing with multiple injuries among wide receivers. Curtis Samuel missed practice due to a hamstring injury, and Elijah Moore is also nursing leg soreness. Defensive players are not immune either; linebacker Terrel Bernard also sat out due to a hamstring issue.
Meanwhile, defensive coordinator Bobby Babich expressed frustration over the team’s lack of takeaways, stating, “In two days we have one takeaway — which we are not happy with.” However, starting safety Taylor Rapp turned things around with two interceptions off quarterback Josh Allen, showcasing his aggressive style of play.
The Bills are also monitoring the status of defensive end AJ Epenesa, who returned to practice today after missing time due to an ankle injury. The competition for backup positions is heating up, particularly among offensive linemen as Spencer Brown remains sidelined with a back injury.
This year’s training camp has drawn extra attention due to HBO’s Hard Knocks, which premieres on August 5. Players like Allen and left tackle Dion Dawkins have adjusted their behavior under the cameras, with Dawkins welcoming the exposure.
As the team gears up for its first preseason game, all eyes will be on Shavers and other injured players to see if they can recover in time. The Bills have less than two weeks to finalize their roster and prepare for the upcoming season.
Stay tuned for ongoing updates as we continue to follow the action live from training camp. The urgency is palpable as the Bills aim to solidify their lineup and make key decisions ahead of the 2025 NFL season.
