The Broadneck Bruins clinched the Class 4A state championship by sweeping the Urbana Hawks in a thrilling match on November 15, 2025, at Harford Community College. The Bruins secured their seventh state title, winning with scores of 28-26, 28-26, and 25-22. This victory marks a significant achievement for the Bruins, who had not won a state title since 2009.

Led by standout performances from Kennedy Smith, who recorded 15 kills, and Sydney Lawrence, who contributed 28 assists, Broadneck demonstrated remarkable teamwork and resilience throughout the match. Despite a strong effort from Urbana’s Simone Assasie, a George Washington commit who also tallied 15 kills, and Charis Burge, a Syracuse commit with 31 assists, the Hawks were unable to overcome Broadneck’s powerful offensive display.

Broadneck’s head coach, Tracey Regalbuto, emphasized her team’s focused mindset going into the playoffs. “We had a focus going into the playoffs that we were not going to look in the stands, and tonight I felt like we were the only people in this building,” Regalbuto stated after the match.

The Bruins’ swift start in the first set showcased their dominance. They maintained a significant lead, reaching 22-16 before Urbana rallied back. Thanks to an ace by Ivory Boone and a serving run from Talia DoCarmo, the Hawks tied the set at 24-24. However, a service error from Urbana and a crucial kill by freshman Camryn Bedell allowed Broadneck to seal the first set 28-26.

The second set saw a shift in momentum, as Urbana initially took the lead. After a tense exchange that tied the score at 25, Broadneck regained control with an ace from Barrett Bolter and a kill by Anna Graves, winning the set 28-26 once again.

The third set proved to be the most dramatic. With their backs against the wall, the Hawks surged to a 22-15 lead, prompting Coach Regalbuto to call a timeout. “I told them to call me crazy, but I had a really good feeling that we were going to win this set,” Regalbuto recalled. Her confidence paid off as Broadneck, propelled by the serving of Chloe Hays, scored 10 consecutive points to clinch the championship.

For Kennedy Smith, this victory marked a poignant end to her high school volleyball career. “I didn’t want to leave this season with any regrets. I’m just so proud of us,” she expressed. Coach Regalbuto reflected on the journey, noting the lessons learned from previous championship losses, stating, “The third time’s a charm. I try to learn from each loss. I think I was a little calmer this time. I’m just really proud of these girls.”

With this championship win, the Broadneck Bruins have reaffirmed their status as one of Maryland’s elite volleyball programs, showcasing their talent and determination on a prominent stage.
