UPDATE: Milwaukee Brewers centerfielder Jackson Chourio’s status for Game 2 of the NLDS against the Chicago Cubs is in doubt after an MRI on his right hamstring returned inconclusive results, according to manager Pat Murphy. This news comes just ahead of the critical game scheduled for September 30, 2023, following Chourio’s exit from Game 1 on Saturday.

Chourio, just 21 years old, left the field after attempting to leg out an infield hit in the second inning, raising immediate concerns about his health. Previously, he sustained a similar hamstring injury in July while facing the Cubs, adding to the urgency of the situation. Murphy commented, “I can’t give you a definitive, but I know that we’re going to test some things today. He’s going to be out there today. I don’t know that he’ll do much.”

The MRI results indicated that while Chourio does not have a serious hamstring strain, his ability to play remains uncertain. If he cannot participate, rookie Isaac Collins is expected to step in. Chourio had a standout performance in Game 1, going 3 for 3 before his injury.

In addition to Chourio’s situation, Murphy confirmed that left-handed pitcher Aaron Ashby will start for the Brewers in Game 2. However, Ashby is not expected to pitch for long after his 1.1 innings outing in the previous game. His role will primarily focus on neutralizing Cubs’ leadoff man Michael Busch, who homered to open Game 1.

“He could go as long as we want him to,” said Murphy regarding Ashby’s potential impact. Following Ashby, righty Quinn Priester is likely to take over, although Murphy withheld specific plans.

The Cubs are set to counter with lefty Shota Imanaga, who pitched in Game 2 of the wild-card round against the San Diego Padres. Cubs manager Craig Counsell praised Imanaga, noting, “He’s a competitor… and he also pitches with a lot of joy on the mound.”

Despite a 5.73 ERA in four career games against the Brewers, Imanaga emphasized the importance of focusing on one out at a time against Milwaukee’s aggressive lineup. “The next guy was up, the next guy was ready,” he said, acknowledging the challenge ahead.

Murphy also expressed confidence in tackling Imanaga’s pitching style, stating, “His heater plays way up. If it says 91, the hitter sees it as 95 to 96.” The Brewers dominated Game 1 with a decisive 9-3 victory, setting the stage for an intense Game 2.

As the Brewers prepare for this crucial matchup, all eyes will be on Chourio’s condition and Ashby’s performance. Fans eagerly await further updates on Chourio’s status as the game approaches.
