The Boston Fleet will open its third season in the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) on Sunday, March 31, 2024, at the Tsongas Center in Lowell against the Montreal Victoire. This season marks a significant transformation for the league, particularly for the Fleet, following the addition of two expansion teams, the Seattle Torrent and the Vancouver Goldeneyes.
In preparation for the new season, the Fleet faced considerable roster changes. The team lost key players including Hilary Knight, Hannah Bilka, and Sydney Bard due to the expansion draft, which reshaped the league’s competitive landscape. In response, the Fleet has focused on rebuilding its roster through the draft and has appointed a new head coach, Kris Sparre, who aims to instill a fresh approach and identity for the team.
Boston finished last season with a record of 9-6-5-10, failing to secure a playoff spot after struggling with consistent scoring. The Fleet’s previous season saw them narrowly miss a championship in the Walter Cup Finals, highlighting the need for a strategic overhaul. With the new season ahead, the team is eager to redefine its dynamics and performance.
New Leadership and Fresh Faces
Sparre, who previously served as an assistant coach for the San Diego Gulls in the American Hockey League, expressed optimism about the upcoming season. He emphasized the importance of adopting a new style of play, stating, “It’s a reset for sure. I think that’s our approach in the coaching staff in the office. We’re going to play a different style.”
Leading the team is new captain Megan Keller, who takes over from Knight. Keller has been a reliable player for the Fleet, noted for her strong defensive skills and leadership qualities. She aims to foster the camaraderie that Knight brought to the team, emphasizing the importance of unity both on and off the ice.
The Fleet’s official roster includes 23 players, featuring 13 forwards, seven defenders, and three goaltenders. Notably, Aerin Frankel, recognized as one of the top goaltenders in the PWHL, will be pivotal in maintaining the team’s competitive edge. The roster also boasts several new faces, with 12 players joining the Fleet this season, including six draft picks.
Among the newcomers is Haley Winn, selected second overall in the June draft. Winn, who excelled at Clarkson University, is expected to make a significant impact this season. Fleet general manager Danielle Marmer remarked on Winn’s poise and maturity, noting her ability to remain composed on the ice, which is a crucial asset for the team.
Winn expressed her aspirations, stating, “I hope to produce and be able to be that offensive defenseman, but also obviously my primary job is to play defense.”
Game Schedule and Home Venue Changes
The Fleet will play only eight of their 30 games at the Tsongas Center this season, a shift from last year when they hosted 11 games there. This season, the team plans to experiment with games at Boston University’s Agganis Arena, hosting four matches there. The first return to the Tsongas Center will not occur until January 14, 2025, after the season opener.
The city of Lowell has designated March 31 as “Fleet Hockey Day” in recognition of the team’s contributions to the community and the excitement surrounding the new season.
As the Boston Fleet embarks on this new chapter, the focus will be on building a stronger team identity and fostering resilience. With a mix of experienced players and promising newcomers, the Fleet aims to make a significant impact in the PWHL this season, striving to reclaim their status as championship contenders.
