In Boone County, Indiana, a new facility dedicated to helping survivors of abuse and violence has recently opened its doors. The Center of Hope, located in the emergency room at Witham’s Whitestown at Anson, aims to provide a safe and confidential environment for individuals impacted by traumatic events.
The center features specialized spaces designed to support victims throughout their recovery process. According to Cari Ann Gunther, foundation manager for Witham Health Services, the facility includes an interview space where victims can meet with detectives to file police reports, alongside victim advocates. Additionally, a forensic examination room is available for evidence collection and injury documentation.
Addressing a Critical Need
Leaders in the community emphasize the importance of the Center of Hope in addressing a significant issue. Kent Eastwood, Boone County Prosecutor, reported that an average of 2,200 instances of sexual assault occur annually in Indiana. He highlighted, “Sexual violence related crime remains an underreported and persistent issue in our community. The opening of the Center of Hope in Boone County marks a vital step forward.”
Previously, survivors often had to travel outside the county to access the care and support they needed. Eastwood noted, “They now have access to a safe, compassionate space right here at home.” The establishment of this center represents a crucial advancement in local resources for survivors.
The Center of Hope was made possible through the generosity of donors, including the Witham Health Services Foundation. Ongoing donations will facilitate the purchase of items intended to enhance visitors’ comfort during their stay.
Creating a Compassionate Environment
Kelly Braverman, CEO and President of Witham Health Services, expressed her support for the initiative, stating, “Having the Witham Center of Hope creates an environment that allows victims to be taken care of in a compassionate manner and in a way that enables them to preserve evidence that is admissible in court.”
This new facility is a significant step toward providing comprehensive support for survivors in Boone County. As the community continues to address the challenges surrounding abuse and violence, the Center of Hope stands as a beacon of hope and healing.
