Bob Sadler has established the “Arkansas Al” Janssen Endowed Scholarship at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock to honor the legacy of a beloved figure in local athletics. This scholarship, funded by a generous gift of $25,000, aims to provide financial assistance to student-athletes pursuing their educational goals at UA Little Rock.

Honoring a Local Legend

For many years, Al Janssen, affectionately known as “Arkansas Al,” was a prominent presence in Little Rock sports. His enthusiastic voice resonated at baseball games, and he stood as a devoted fan at countless events. Janssen’s contributions to the Trojan Legion Club were significant, and his passing five years ago left a void in the community. Sadler’s decision to create this scholarship is a heartfelt tribute to ensure Janssen’s spirit endures.

“When Al died, we wanted to set up a scholarship in his name,” Sadler explained. “I didn’t want the legacy of our club to fade away. In some small way, I want to make sure the memory of the Trojan Legion Club continues on.” Sadler has been involved with the Trojan Legion Club for decades, holding nearly every leadership position, and hopes this scholarship reflects the camaraderie and school spirit that Janssen embodied.

A Commitment to Student-Athletes

The Trojan Legion Club was founded in the early 1980s, initially named the Tip-In Club to support basketball. It has since grown into the largest and longest-standing booster organization within Little Rock Athletics, now supporting all athletic programs. The club plays a crucial role in fostering school spirit and raising essential funds for the university’s athletic teams.

Sadler’s personal connection to the Trojan sports community began early in his career when his employer, Entergy, funded his college night classes. This opportunity allowed him to attend basketball games for free, solidifying his passion for live sports. He recalls his first game in the old gym and the excitement that followed during the team’s glory years. “I was there when we beat Notre Dame and went to our first NCAA Tournament,” he said.

With the establishment of the “Arkansas Al” Endowed Scholarship, Sadler aims to support student-athletes in achieving their academic aspirations while competing at a high level. “Hopefully this scholarship will help student-athletes get an education, which is the reason they’re really here,” he noted. This initiative not only honors Janssen but also reinforces the Trojan Legion Club’s commitment to its members and the wider community.

The scholarship will serve as a lasting tribute to Janssen’s influence and the enduring spirit of the Trojan community, ensuring that future generations of student-athletes at UA Little Rock receive the support they need to succeed.
