URGENT UPDATE: Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette is officially out for the remainder of the regular season due to a sprained left knee. This development comes as the Blue Jays, currently leading the AL East, hope to see him return for the playoffs beginning October 4.
Bichette, sidelined since September 7, received a second opinion from Dr. Dan Cooper in Dallas earlier this week. The diagnosis confirmed no structural damage and no surgery is required, but he will not be back in time for the regular season. Blue Jays manager John Schneider stated, “The only time frame you can put on it right now is he’s not going to be back for the regular season. But I think he’s working hard to be back as soon as he can after.”
As of today, the Blue Jays maintain the best record in the American League and hold a five-game lead over the New York Yankees with only 12 games remaining in the season. If they secure the division and finish among the top two AL seeds, they will kick off the postseason at home on October 4. However, should they find themselves in a Wild Card Series, that will commence on September 30.
Schneider mentioned that it is possible Bichette could return initially as the designated hitter before resuming defensive play. “Second opinion was positive,” Schneider added, emphasizing that the focus now is on rehabilitation and comfort as Bichette ramps up his activities.
During a rehabilitation session at the club’s spring training complex in Florida, Bichette was expected to join his teammates at George M. Steinbrenner Field later today. The plan is for him to begin baseball activities later this week, which includes swinging the bat and running the bases.
The 27-year-old two-time All-Star was injured during a play at home plate against the Yankees on September 6 and was placed on the 10-day injured list retroactive to September 7. Before the injury, Bichette had an impressive season, batting .311 with 18 home runs, 94 RBI, and an .840 OPS across 139 games. He leads the majors with 181 hits and 44 doubles.
With the postseason looming, the Blue Jays are keenly aware of the impact Bichette’s presence has on their success. As he works towards recovery, fans and teammates alike are hopeful for his swift return to the field.
Stay tuned for more updates on Bichette’s recovery and the Blue Jays’ playoff journey.
