The character of Sean Reagan from the long-running series Blue Bloods has undergone a significant change as the show has transitioned to its new spinoff, Boston Blue. Actor Andrew Terraciano, who portrayed Sean for nearly 300 episodes since 2010, has been recast, with Mika Amonsen stepping into the role. This change coincided with the spinoff’s premiere in October 2024, raising questions about Terraciano’s current pursuits and the creative decisions behind the recasting.

Terraciano, now 22, gained recognition for his portrayal of Sean Reagan, sharing the screen with his brother Tony Terraciano, who played Jack Reagan, Donnie Wahlberg’s eldest son. The recent shift in casting has been described by Brandon Margolis, the show’s creator, as a necessary evolution in the story. Margolis stated in an interview with Variety that the decision was made to explore new narrative avenues, emphasizing a shift not only for Sean but also for the character of Danny Reagan, who is now navigating fatherhood with a son in law enforcement.

Margolis explained, “We love Andrew and the work he did over the years on Blue Bloods. Really, it came down to we’re telling a new chapter in both of their lives.” He described the recasting as an “organic opportunity” to inject fresh energy into the series. The writers are eager to delve into “new storytelling lanes” that the spinoff offers.

Amonsen’s Tribute to Terraciano

Despite the transition, Andrew Terraciano has remained somewhat active on social media, keeping a reference to his role in his Instagram bio. He took a brief hiatus from posting but returned in November with images showcasing time spent with friends, suggesting he is moving forward positively following the changes.

Amonsen, reflecting on the responsibility of taking over the role, expressed her desire to honor Terraciano’s interpretation of Sean. “I definitely felt a ton of pressure at first. I felt the pressure to respect an actor before me because I wanted to respect Andrew the best I could,” she remarked. In preparing for her role, Amonsen revisited key episodes of Blue Bloods to understand Sean’s character development, particularly in his later years.

“I wanted to respect Andrew’s portrayal of Sean as much as I could — but also adding something to my own version,” she noted. The support from showrunners Brandon Sonnier and Margolis allowed her the freedom to explore the dynamics of her character with Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan.

New Directions for Sean Reagan

Amonsen’s approach to the character has involved maintaining visual elements reminiscent of Terraciano’s performance while infusing her unique energy. “I have a lot more of an upbeat energy myself,” she shared, indicating that her personality influences her take on Sean. This newfound direction also opens up storytelling possibilities, particularly in exploring the father-son relationship in a way not previously depicted.

“It’s quite comforting to realize that I didn’t feel obligated to change that part of me,” she stated, emphasizing her intention to carve out a distinct yet respectful portrayal of Sean. The spinoff aims to uncover narratives related to Sean’s new role as a police officer, a development that adds depth to his character and the existing dynamics.

As Boston Blue continues, viewers can expect a fresh perspective on familiar relationships and the evolution of beloved characters. The show airs on CBS every Friday at 22:00 ET, inviting audiences to witness this new chapter unfold.
