The construction of the new Berry Road Bridge, spanning the Big River, is nearing completion, with a tentative opening date set for October 7. This development has been closely monitored by Brian Long, the St. Francois County Road and Bridge Administrator, who provides weekly updates to the County Commission regarding the project’s progress.
During a meeting on September 2, the County Commission expressed optimism about the project, noting, “It seems like they’re making great strides and things are coming together. So, I hope we’ll get that project wrapped up in October and be ready to drive on it.”
The construction has required adjustments to the surrounding infrastructure, including the elevation of Turkey Creek Road, located just south of the Big River. Long indicated that work on this road is ongoing, with preparations for gravel and paving expected to be completed soon. Despite challenges posed by a wet spring, favorable weather conditions during the summer have facilitated progress.
Completion of the bridge will significantly benefit residents living north of the structure by providing direct access to Bonne Terre without the need to navigate the heavily trafficked US 67. This improvement will also enhance school bus routes, allowing them to operate without crossing US 67 to reach roads located west of Berry Road.
The total cost of the project is $4 million, funded through $2.2 million from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), enacted in 2021, along with $1.8 million in state grants. The previous bridge was dismantled in 2013 after being declared unsafe for vehicle use.
As the project approaches its completion date, the community eagerly anticipates the reopening of the Berry Road Bridge, which promises to enhance connectivity and safety for local residents.
