UPDATE: Benicia High School’s girls’ basketball team delivered a commanding performance, defeating Vacaville High by a score of 58-39 on December 19, 2023. The Panthers showcased a powerful second half, solidifying their victory just days before the holiday season.
After leading by only 24-16 at halftime, the Panthers (8-2) exploded offensively, outscoring the Bulldogs (1-9) in the third quarter. Sophomore guard Ella Lum was the star of the night, scoring a game-high 25 points, with 14 points coming in the decisive second half. Her aggressive play ignited the team’s momentum.
“I think the difference in the third quarter was energy,” Lum stated following the game. “At the beginning, we came out flat, but our defense improved, and we got a lot of steals off our press.”
Despite the loss, Vacaville’s Charlie Cook put forth an impressive effort, netting 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Cook’s skill at the foul line was notable, as she converted 10 of 11 free throw attempts.
“I thought we were a little handy on defense,” remarked Benicia coach Corey Ott. “Vacaville shot 27 free throws. It was crucial that we switched to man-to-man defense to reduce fouls and improve our positioning.”
Initially, the game was tightly contested. The Bulldogs took an early lead at 7-6 following a three-point play by Cook. However, the Panthers quickly responded with steals that led to fast-break points, establishing a 12-7 advantage.
Benicia’s defense was relentless, holding Vacaville scoreless from the field in the second quarter. Though the Bulldogs managed to stay close by sinking 7 of 10 free throws, they could not find their rhythm offensively. Lum’s crucial basket just before halftime gave the Panthers a 24-16 lead.
As the third quarter began, Lum spearheaded an 11-2 run, pushing the score to 35-18. The Panthers extended their lead to 46-27 by the end of the third quarter, effectively sealing the game.
Senior Sierra Patz contributed with 8 points, supporting Lum’s offensive efforts. Coach Ott praised Lum’s ability to elevate her teammates’ performance, stating, “What I love about Ella is she gets other girls involved. Without her, we wouldn’t have that point guard presence.”
As the Panthers wrap up their nonleague schedule, they prepare for a tough matchup against Northgate in the Diablo Athletic League on January 6, 2024. Coach Ott emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum, stating, “Last year, we faltered in league play after a strong preseason. This year, we’re pushing hard to stay in shape and improve our skills.”
Meanwhile, Vacaville will look to bounce back with one more game in 2023, facing West Park this Friday, before starting Monticello Empire League play on January 9 against rival Will C. Wood.
In junior varsity action, the Panthers secured a 33-20 victory, leading 16-6 at halftime.
This game not only showcased thrilling basketball but also highlighted the determination and resilience of both teams as they head into the new year.
