Former professional wrestler and MMA fighter Ben Askren provided an encouraging update on his recovery after undergoing a double lung transplant last week. The 38-year-old athlete, renowned for his accomplishments in both wrestling and mixed martial arts, faced severe health challenges due to pneumonia stemming from an unaddressed staph infection. Following the surgery, Askren has made significant progress, regaining consciousness and actively communicating with fans.
In a recent social media video, Askren appeared visibly improved. He spoke with clarity, having taken the time to shave and style his hair, which contributed to his more comfortable appearance. During this update, he reflected on a diary entry from a friend regarding Father’s Day, a day he spent unconscious. Askren candidly admitted to experiencing moments of self-pity but emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive outlook.
“I’m going to plead guilty, I felt guilty for myself one time,” he shared. “And that doesn’t do anyone any good. I thought, ‘man, I never smoked one cigarette, never smoked any weed, never did anything. Why did my lungs get stolen from me?’ But I realized, it happened. So I can be bitter and angry, I could whine and cry, but that’s not going to help anybody.”
Askren concluded his message with a hopeful note, stating, “I will not feel sorry for myself, I’m going to be out of here very soon.” His video has already amassed over a million views, demonstrating the widespread support he has garnered from fans and fellow athletes alike.
Support from the MMA Community
There has been an overwhelming outpouring of support for Askren from both the MMA and wrestling communities. Notably, Dana White, President of the UFC, praised Askren for his resilience, highlighting the fighter’s “unbelievable” spirit during this challenging time.
Additionally, former rival Jorge Masvidal, known for their intense competition in the octagon, publicly expressed his admiration for Askren in a heartfelt video. Masvidal stated, “I know we were rivals in the ring, I just want to say God bless you. I know you’re gonna pull through this because you’re a warrior.” He extended an invitation to meet and pray with Askren once he returns to the United States.
Even Jake Paul, the YouTube star turned boxer who previously clashed with Askren, has shown his support. Paul’s backing underscores the unity among athletes in the face of personal adversity, regardless of past rivalries.
Askren’s journey has resonated with many, not only within the sports community but also among the general public. His determination and positive attitude serve as a source of inspiration for those facing their own challenges.
As he continues on the path to recovery, Askren’s story highlights the importance of resilience and support in overcoming life-altering health issues. With his spirits high and a robust support system behind him, he remains focused on moving forward with hope and determination.
