John Matthew Mulkern, Jr., affectionately known as Jack, passed away on November 28, 2025, at the age of 83. A devoted father and grandfather, Jack left behind a legacy of service and compassion that resonated throughout his community.

Jack was born to the late Mary (Molly) and John ‘Pat’ Mulkern. He spent his formative years in Charlestown and Nahant, Massachusetts, where he developed a strong sense of pride in his Boston heritage, often referring to himself as a ‘Bunker Hillbilly.’ His commitment to service was evident during his seven years in the United States Coast Guard, where he balanced military duties with education and work as a lobsterman off the coast of Gloucester.

Despite his love for the ocean, Jack found his true calling in psychology. Over a span of more than three decades, he worked with the Lowell Public School System, dedicating his life to helping children and families navigate their challenges. After retiring, he continued his mission in private practice, where his impact on the lives of others remained profound.

Values and Family Legacy

Jack was known for his unwavering values of humor, honesty, integrity, and hard work. He shared a remarkable 55 years of marriage with his wife, Barbara Mulkern. Their partnership exemplified loyalty and love, qualities that Jack demonstrated in both his personal and professional life.

In addition to Barbara, Jack is survived by his daughters, Pamela Welch and Patrice Mulkern, and his grandchildren, Catherine and Jack. He also leaves behind his brother-in-law, Joseph ‘Joe’ Maggio, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who cherished him.

Memorial Services and Tributes

To honor Jack’s life and contributions, services will be held at 11:00 AM on December 30, 2025, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Nahant, followed by a burial at Greenlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to St. Jude Hospital or the Charlestown Boys and Girls Club, organizations that reflect Jack’s commitment to helping others.

Jack Mulkern’s legacy as a dedicated psychologist and loving family man will be remembered by all who had the privilege to know him. His contributions to the community and the lives he touched will continue to resonate long after his passing.
