A Life of Service and Accomplishment

Born on August 13, 1947, in Portsmouth, Virginia, Russ was the son of Claire Taylor and Russell Borden, Sr.. He completed his education at Montville High School in 1965 before pursuing further studies at Mitchell College and Mohegan Community College. His professional career included a significant tenure at General Dynamics, where he worked in the Electric Boat Division’s Naval Architecture Weight Engineering Department. Russ played a pivotal role in the design and ballasting of numerous submarines, including the 668s and TRIDENT class submarines.

His service to the nation included a proud stint in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict. It was during this period that he met his future wife, Joann. The couple married on September 13, 1969, forging a partnership that would last for over five decades.

After his military service, Russ returned to Connecticut and continued his career at Electric Boat, where he dedicated 42 years before retiring in 2008. Following his retirement, Russ and Joann relocated to Williamsburg, Virginia, where they enjoyed their golden years together.

Family and Community Impact

Russ is survived by his three children: Todd Borden (Maggie) of Olvera, Spain, Tara Borden of Nyack, New York, and Seth Borden of West Greenwich, Rhode Island. He is also remembered fondly by his grandson, Benjamin Borden, and his siblings, including Janet Beving of Rockford, Illinois, and Pamela Tashea (Thomas) of Griswold, Connecticut. Russ leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and inspiration for his numerous nieces and nephews.
