Kathleen Ann Giacalone, a cherished elementary school teacher and beloved member of her community, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on April 24, 1937, in San Pedro, she dedicated her life to education and family, leaving a lasting impact on those around her.
Kathleen grew up in a close-knit family as the daughter of Vincent and Antoinette Vitalich. She later moved to Lomita with her husband, Rosario (Jack) Giacalone, where they built a life together. Kathleen devoted 39 years to teaching elementary students, shaping young minds and nurturing a love for learning.
A Life of Dedication and Adventure
After retiring, Kathleen embraced her passion for travel, exploring new places and cultures. Her adventurous spirit resonated with family and friends, who remember her stories of adventure and her love for life. She is survived by her husband, Jack; her daughter, ToniLynn (Tomo) Meek; her son, Paul (Kelly) Giacalone; her four grandchildren, Tommy, Anthony, Jacquelyn, and Gianna; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In honor of Kathleen’s life, the family requests that donations be made in her name to organizations that reflect her values and commitment to helping others. Contributions can be directed to Shriners Children’s, St. Jude’s Research Hospital, Disabled American Veterans, and the San Pedro Peninsula Cancer Guild.
Memorial Services
A Funeral Mass will be held in Kathleen’s honor on December 2, 2025, at Mary Star of the Sea Church, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Family, friends, and former students are invited to celebrate her life and the profound impact she had on so many. Her legacy will continue to inspire those who knew her, ensuring that her contributions to education and community will never be forgotten.
