Judith Faye Graves, known affectionately as Judy, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on July 22, 1937, in Columbus, Ohio, Judy was deeply cherished by her family and friends, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to community service and personal connections.
Judy is survived by her sister, Carol (Robert) Parlette, and her beloved nieces and nephews, including Mike and Lee Oldfield, Holly (Shawn) Smith, and Heidi (Shane) Smith. She was also supported in life by her dear friend and caregiver, Greg Fancher. Her passing is marked by the loss of her husband, Richard L. Graves, and daughter, Pilar M. Graves, along with her parents, John and Iris Swartz, and sister, Shane Oldfield.
A Life of Service and Community Engagement
A graduate of Ohio University, Judy’s university life was characterized by her active role as Vice President of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. It was there that she met Richard and eventually moved to Whittier, California, to build their life together. Judy’s commitment to her community was evident throughout her career, particularly during her more than 20 years with the Buena Park Police Department.
In her role there, she served as Secretary for the two Captains and the Professional Standards Sergeant, providing invaluable support and assistance to the Chief of Police. Her contributions to the department earned her several awards recognizing her achievements and dedication to enhancing community safety and well-being.
Judy’s commitment extended beyond her professional life. She was known for her love of family and tradition, spending summers at the family’s historic cabin in McArthur, Ohio. These gatherings allowed her to connect with friends and relatives while creating lasting memories.
A Legacy of Love and Remembrance
Judy’s impact on her communities in both California and Ohio was profound. She believed in the importance of strengthening the bonds within her neighborhoods, contributing to a sense of security and unity. Her legacy is one of service, love, and unwavering support for those around her.
In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, honoring Judy’s memory and commitment to health advocacy.
