Mary Ann Phibbs, a cherished member of the Albany community, passed away on November 18, 2025, at the age of 89 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital. Her contributions to both her family and the community have left a lasting impact that will be remembered by many.
Born on June 27, 1936, in Schenectady, New York, Mary Ann was the daughter of the late John Xavier and Agnes Smith Phibbs. She is survived by her wife of 45 years, Marilyn MacBride, as well as her beloved nieces, Kathleen Phibbs Brown of Scotia, NY, and Elizabeth Phibbs Roff (Edward) of Stony Point, NY.
A Career of Dedication and Achievement
Mary Ann graduated from Mount Pleasant High School before pursuing higher education at The College of Saint Rose, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree while working full-time. Her professional journey spanned over 40 years at the Department of Motor Vehicles, where she began in the steno pool and ultimately rose to the position of Manager of Personnel.
Beyond her professional achievements, Mary Ann was also an avid golfer. She made history as the first woman to achieve a hole-in-one at the Stadium Golf Course and was a two-time club champion at the Stadium Country Club. Her competitive spirit was evident in various Member Guest Tournaments at other clubs, showcasing her dedication to the sport.
Community Engagement and Philanthropy
Mary Ann’s commitment to her community extended beyond her career and hobbies. She served as an Albany County Master Gardener Volunteer for 20 years, earning Emeritus Status for her service. In this role, she provided gardening advice to the public, helped maintain community gardens, and participated in Garden Education Day for many years. Her passion for gardening was also evident in the beautiful gardens she cultivated at her own home.
In addition to her gardening efforts, Mary Ann was actively involved with Our Brothers Keepers, where she served as a volunteer and vice president. This organization focuses on raising funds to support those affected by AIDS, highlighting her dedication to helping vulnerable populations.
Friends and relatives are invited to pay their respects to Mary Ann’s family on November 24, 2025, from 15:00 to 18:00 at McVeigh Funeral Home, located at 208 North Allen Street, Albany, NY 12206. Attendees are asked to enter the funeral home from the rear parking lot entrance only.
The funeral service will be held on November 25, 2025, at 10:30 at The Parish of Mater Christi, located at 40 Hopewell Street (Rev. Kenneth J. Doyle Way), Albany, NY 12208, where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated. Following the service, the Rite of Committal will take place at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna, NY.
