URGENT UPDATE: Avelo Airlines has just announced it will completely cease operations from its West Coast base at Hollywood Burbank Airport by December 2, 2025. This decision marks a significant shift for the budget airline, which has served Southern California for over four years.
CEO Andrew Levy confirmed the closure today, stating that ongoing financial challenges have made it unsustainable to continue operations in a “highly competitive backdrop.” The airline, which launched its current brand during the pandemic, quickly became a staple at Burbank, even celebrating its 1 millionth passenger earlier this year. At one point, Burbank flights accounted for one-third of Avelo’s total customers.
However, the airline is relocating its fleet and staff to other hubs, primarily on the East Coast, including Hartford, Connecticut, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Wilmington, Delaware. Employees based in California will have the opportunity to transfer, but the closure means many will face uncertainty.
Avelo’s flights to various Northern California destinations, Oregon, and even Montana have been popular, but Levy cited inadequate financial returns as a critical factor in this decision. “We believe the continuation of service from Hollywood Burbank Airport will not deliver adequate financial returns,” he explained.
The announcement follows a period of backlash against Avelo for its charter flights assisting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement with deportations. While the airline maintains that this decision is unrelated to the charter program, it has faced significant public pressure, including calls for a boycott.
Passengers with existing bookings can cancel their flights online and receive a full refund. As Avelo prepares for this major transition, it remains urgent for travelers to stay informed about their flight options and future changes.
What’s Next: Avelo Airlines is expected to continue its East Coast expansion while gradually shutting down its Burbank operations. Travel experts advise customers to monitor updates closely, as the airline begins this significant shift.
