UPDATE: In a significant crackdown on illegal cockfighting, authorities have seized 239 birds linked to a brutal fighting ring in Sheffield Township, Ohio. This operation, which took place on July 3, 2025, was executed by the Friendship Animal Protective League (FAPL) in collaboration with the Lorain County Sheriff’s Department.
This raid marks the fourth time this year that FAPL has dismantled cockfighting operations in Lorain County. Cockfighting, a cruel bloodsport where roosters fight to the death, is illegal and poses severe risks to animal welfare. Agents discovered fighting pits and various cockfighting paraphernalia during their search, including sharp blades known as “gaffs” used to inflict lethal wounds on the birds.
Conditions for the birds were dire. Many were housed in cages filled with mud and waste, severely affecting their health and mobility. “Cockfighting is a brutal and inhumane act,” stated FAPL executive director Gregory Willey. “These birds are subjected to extreme suffering for the sake of ‘entertainment’ and profit. We are committed to exposing these operations and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.”
A probable cause hearing is scheduled for July 16, 2025, to determine the future of the seized animals as the case progresses. Despite any bond being posted by the owners, the birds will remain in FAPL’s custody due to the evidence of animal cruelty discovered.
FAPL, which is the only humane society authorized to investigate animal abuse in the county, relies entirely on donations to fund its operations. Following this significant influx of animals, the organization urgently needs help. Monetary contributions and animal care supplies can be made directly through their website at www.friendshipapl.org.
This urgent situation highlights the ongoing battle against animal cruelty and the importance of community support in the fight for animal rights. As investigations continue, the public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspected animal abuse.
