A recovery coach in Austin, Texas, is drawing attention to mental health by innovatively blending physical fitness with therapeutic practices. Davis Collins, the founder of Amethyst Coaching Collaborative, aims to provide a holistic approach for individuals grappling with mental health challenges.

Collins emphasizes the need for alternative support methods, stating, “There are people that need something different, there are people right now that are waking up and praying for help.” His personal journey through addiction and a significant near-death experience motivated him to seek ways to assist others on their path to recovery.

Reflecting on his past, Collins recounted a life-altering moment when he found himself upside down in his truck after crashing into a telephone pole on Enfield Road in Austin. This pivotal experience led him to discover that physical activity, such as running and working out, was a crucial coping mechanism. Yet, he recognized that mental health support required more than just physical exertion.

Holistic Approach to Recovery

Collins believes that therapy is essential for achieving a comprehensive understanding of one’s emotional well-being. He stated, “Connecting with your emotional body, starting to learn the tools that will keep you from abusing, and more so important, the why. The why is really the question everyone should ask.” This focus on understanding the underlying reasons for struggles is central to the program he offers.

At Amethyst, the objective is to foster a balance in what Collins describes as “an unbalanced life.” He aims to create a supportive environment that addresses the physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental aspects of health, particularly for those dealing with addiction or mental health issues. To further this mission, Collins has recruited a team of ten therapists to enhance the services provided.

Ilicia Balaban, a therapist and owner of Snowflakes Counseling, PLLC, supports Collins’ vision. She remarked, “Your mental health matters just as much as your physical health and yes, there is help out there for everyone.” Balaban was eager to join the initiative, recognizing the effectiveness of combining physical and mental health strategies.

As Balaban noted, this dual approach has gained popularity in higher levels of care, but individuals often struggle to maintain their coping strategies once they return to their communities after treatment. “Life is hard and life is getting harder for a lot of people,” she said, highlighting the importance of a strong support system.

Future Plans for Expansion

Collins expresses a commitment to expanding the services offered through Amethyst Coaching Collaborative, aiming to reach more individuals seeking help. His vision is to create a comprehensive network of support that empowers people to take charge of their mental health while also incorporating physical wellness.

The emergence of programs like Collins’ underscores the growing recognition of the importance of mental health and the need for innovative solutions in an increasingly challenging world. By addressing both physical and emotional needs, Amethyst Coaching Collaborative stands as a testament to a more integrated approach to recovery.
