UPDATE: Tre Winfrey, a beloved figure in Aurora, Illinois, has passed away at the age of 36 due to complications related to a severe spinal injury sustained in a shooting incident in 2007. Winfrey’s death on September 18, 2023, comes after 18 years of resilience and inspiring those around him despite the challenges he faced as a quadriplegic.
Winfrey, who was shot in March 2007 while driving, survived the incident but was left with life-altering injuries. He became a symbol of strength and positivity in his community. His mother, Rita Robinson, shared that Tre’s journey was marked by his unwavering spirit and dedication to living life to the fullest, stating, “Tre kept holding me up. He truly was the wind beneath my wings.”
Through his years of rehabilitation, Tre achieved remarkable milestones, including attending his high school prom just months after the shooting and graduating from East Aurora High School. He became a certified insurance agent for State Farm and dreamed of opening his own agency, showcasing his determination and ambition.
A wake for Tre will be held on October 10 from 4 to 7 p.m. at James-Payne Funeral Services, located at 204 Hill Ave., Aurora. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 11 a.m. on October 11 at St. John AME Church, 2950 Bilter Road, Aurora. The community is coming together once again to support the family, as Tre was uninsurable due to his condition. Tre’s friend, Justin Tiner, recalled his best friend as a beacon of love and gratitude, saying, “He was always about love, the definition of grateful.” Aurora Police Chief Matt Thomas echoed these sentiments, stating, “Tre’s resilience and the way he chose to live his life left a lasting example for everyone who knew him.”
Throughout his life, Tre inspired many by participating in community events and sharing his positive outlook on social media.
