Atlassian, the well-known IT collaboration software provider, has acquired Secoda, a startup based in Toronto that specializes in data cataloging. The financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed, but the acquisition marks a significant step for Atlassian in expanding its data management capabilities.
Founded in 2021, Secoda offers a platform designed to democratize access to organizational data, making it available to all employees, regardless of their technical skills. The platform utilizes artificial intelligence to connect various data sources, including models, pipelines, databases, and visualization tools, providing a comprehensive overview of a company’s data landscape.
In a notable move just a month prior to the acquisition, Secoda raised $14 million in a Series A funding round led by Craft Ventures. This funding was instrumental in enhancing Secoda’s data discovery and search capabilities, which will now be integrated into Atlassian’s AI-powered platform, Rovo. This platform aims to unify data from both Atlassian and third-party software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications.
Strategic Integration and Future Prospects
In a blog post, Secoda’s co-founder, Etai Mizrahi, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, noting that it aligns with their mission to provide seamless data access for enterprise teams. He stated, “Joining the Atlassian team is a natural next step on our mission to put knowledge where people actually work.” Mizrahi highlighted the significant overlap between Secoda’s target users and those utilizing Atlassian products.
Atlassian’s collaboration and management software is utilized by over 300,000 customers worldwide, including high-profile organizations such as NASA, Rivian, Deutsche Bank, United Airlines, and Bosch. The Rovo platform enhances workplace productivity by mapping the human aspects of work and providing contextual insights through its Teamwork Graph feature, alongside capabilities for search, chat, and AI agents.
The acquisition of Secoda is part of Atlassian’s broader strategy to enhance its product offerings. This follows previous acquisitions, including that of intelligence specialist DX and The Browser Company. By integrating Secoda’s expertise in data organization and AI-driven cataloging, Atlassian aims to empower businesses, particularly those managing complex enterprise-scale data, to provide employees with the necessary context to make informed decisions and take action “right where they work.”
Commitment to Existing Customers
As the integration of Secoda into Atlassian progresses, the company has assured existing Secoda customers that their experience will remain uninterrupted. Mizrahi emphasized the importance of continuity, stating, “As we integrate, we will migrate parts of our infrastructure and ensure your team is fully supported while we transition to Atlassian’s Cloud Platform.” He assured customers that they would be kept informed with clear technical plans and timelines throughout the transition process.
Atlassian’s acquisition of Secoda not only enhances its capabilities but also underscores its commitment to driving AI innovation within its System of Work, ultimately delivering greater value to its customers through improved access to data.
