Atlantic City casinos have come together this Thanksgiving to provide meals for those in need. On Wednesday, chefs and volunteers collaborated with the Salvation Army to prepare a full Thanksgiving feast, aiming to support individuals and families struggling financially. This initiative marks the 15th year of this community effort, as local casinos continue to play a vital role in addressing food insecurity.

The culinary team, composed of professional chefs from various establishments, dedicated hours to cooking a meal for hundreds at the Salvation Army in Atlantic City. One volunteer, Francis, shared his motivations, explaining that he recently faced unemployment but felt fortunate to have a strong support system. “It’s tough for everybody, you know. I’m just lucky to have that support system that not a lot of people do have,” he said.

Community Collaboration and Growing Needs

According to Michael D’Angelo, a volunteer chef involved in the initiative, multiple casinos and institutions contributed to this cause. “A lot of casinos help us out a whole lot… Tropicana, Bally’s, Resort’s, Atlantic Cape Community College,” he noted. The collaboration is more crucial than ever, as demand for assistance has surged.

Last year, the team served over 300 meals and anticipates exceeding that number this year based on rising community needs. Lesley Colon from the Salvation Army in Atlantic City emphasized the growing demand, stating, “We expect to do that, and even more this year, based on the need in the community.”

Recent statistics reveal a troubling trend in homelessness across the region. An annual count indicated that the homeless population in Atlantic County has more than doubled compared to figures from 2021. Statewide numbers have also increased, highlighting a pressing issue that many residents face.

Challenges Faced by the Community

The escalating cost of housing has made it increasingly difficult for individuals to maintain stable living conditions. Steven Brigham, a homeless advocate, explained, “The cost of housing keeps going up. And a single individual has to be a paid professional to make it on their own.”

In recent weeks, the Salvation Army has experienced a noticeable uptick in requests for assistance. Many individuals have reported delays in receiving their SNAP benefits, which further complicates their ability to secure food and essentials.

As the holiday season approaches, the collaboration among Atlantic City casinos and their commitment to feeding those in need reflects a broader community spirit. This effort not only provides sustenance but also fosters a sense of hope and support for those facing challenging circumstances.
