A striking new image has emerged from the depths of space, showcasing the Lion Nebula, also known as Sh2-132. Captured by astrophotographer Ronald Brecher in October 2025, this breathtaking vista reveals the nebula’s swirling gas and vibrant colors, evoking the powerful imagery of a lion in motion. The photograph was taken under a near-full moon from Brecher’s home in Ontario, Canada.
The Lion Nebula is located approximately 10,000 light-years away in the constellation Cepheus. This constellation can be easily spotted high above the northern horizon in the hours following sunset during November. Within the nebula reside two enormous stars, each possessing a mass equivalent to 20 suns. The radiation emitted from these stars has ionized and shaped the surrounding cloud of interstellar dust and gas, causing it to emit a captivating glow.
Brecher dedicated over 35 hours to capture this extraordinary image using a combination of his Sky-Watcher Esprit 70 EDX refractor and specialized astronomy filters. These filters are designed to capture specific parts of the light spectrum, enhancing the final image’s clarity and detail.
In post-processing, Brecher created two visually distinct renditions of the nebula. One version utilized the Hubble palette, which assigns colors to specific wavelength bands of light, echoing the iconic style of images produced by the Hubble Space Telescope. The second version employed the Foraxx palette, which offers a more dynamic approach to interpreting the light data, resulting in a richer and more dramatic color presentation.
