UPDATE: UFC lightweight contender Arman Tsarukyan is urgently seeking a BMF title fight against Max Holloway after being overlooked for an interim lightweight title bout. The UFC’s decision to feature Justin Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett in the headline match of UFC 324 on January 24, 2024, in Las Vegas, has left Tsarukyan frustrated and ready to take action.
The promotion opted for Gaethje and Pimblett, ranked Nos. 4 and 5, instead of Tsarukyan, despite his status as the No. 1 contender at 155 pounds. The interim title was created following Ilia Topuria‘s announcement of personal time off, raising questions about the fairness of the rankings.
Tsarukyan (23-3) expressed his disappointment in an interview with ESPN, stating it was “hard” to accept the news but emphasized he cannot afford to wait. “It’s a business,” said Tsarukyan. “At the end of the day, I have the same goal. Everybody knows that I will beat everybody, and it’s just a matter of time. I hope they give me the BMF title at least.” He further questioned the UFC’s decision-making and the lack of available opponents if not for Holloway.
Holloway (27-8) is fresh off a five-round decision victory against Dustin Poirier in July and has shown interest in facing former champion Charles Oliveira. Tsarukyan is eager to secure his spot in the title race, remarking, “What are they going to give me? Who do we have in our division to fight if it’s not Holloway?”
The Armenian fighter is also skeptical about the UFC’s intentions, believing they are fast-tracking Pimblett (23-3) for promotional reasons. Tsarukyan even offered to assist Gaethje in training for the bout against Pimblett, stating, “Justin, if you need the help, let me know and I’ll fly to you. I want him to [beat] that bulls— guy. I hate him.” His fiery remarks signal a strong desire for a showdown.
“If I see Patty, I would like to slap him,” Tsarukyan added, showcasing his frustration with the current situation.
According to UFC CEO Dana White, the winner of the interim title fight is expected to face Topuria later in 2026, which could mean a long wait for Tsarukyan. Despite the delays, he remains confident, stating, “That fight is going to happen for sure. Everybody is saying, ‘Arman, Arman, Arman.’ Everybody knows it’s bulls—. The next champion is here.”
With tensions rising and Tsarukyan’s determination clear, all eyes are now on the upcoming title fight and whether the UFC will grant him the BMF opportunity he desires. Fans and followers are eagerly anticipating the outcomes of UFC 324 and the implications for the lightweight division.
