Argentine President Javier Milei has launched the Isaac Accords, a new initiative aimed at enhancing political, economic, and cultural ties between Argentina, Israel, and select Latin American countries. This framework, inspired by the Abraham Accords, is designed to establish long-lasting diplomatic partnerships and bolster cooperation in strategic sectors.
The announcement came after a meeting in Buenos Aires with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, who is currently on a tour of the region to strengthen diplomatic relations and coordinate joint projects. During this meeting, Milei emphasized Argentina’s role as a “pioneer” in collaboration with the United States in this initiative, reflecting a significant shift in Argentina’s foreign policy towards Israel.
Phase One of the Isaac Accords will target countries such as Uruguay, Panama, and Costa Rica, where preliminary discussions on cooperation in technology, security, and economic development have already begun. According to Sa’ar, the framework aims to transform political alignment into structured regional programs that benefit all parties involved.
Milei’s commitment to strengthening ties with Israel is further underscored by discussions regarding Argentina’s plan to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Sa’ar noted that they reviewed the details of this move, including preparations for a celebratory event anticipated in the spring. He remarked on Milei’s enthusiasm, stating, “See you soon in Jerusalem,” as they concluded their discussions.
In a public statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed gratitude towards Milei for his “moral clarity, vision, and courage,” which he believes will usher in a new era of mutual interests and values between Israel and Latin America. Netanyahu noted that the collaborative efforts could elevate bilateral relations to significant new heights, especially with support from the United States.
As part of advancing the Isaac Accords, Argentina’s Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno is scheduled to travel to Israel in February 2024 to discuss operational structures. The coordination of local implementation and outreach to regional partners will be overseen by Ambassador Axel Wahnish.
Milei has articulated a strong personal commitment to Judaism, stating his intention to convert once he leaves office. His administration has notably reshaped Argentina’s relations with Israel since taking power, reflecting a profound shift in diplomatic strategy. Speaking at a recent event marking the 90th anniversary of the Delegación de Asociaciones Israelitas Argentinas, Sa’ar commended Milei for his “courageous and forceful” support for Israel, aligning with the president’s call for the free world to unite against threats to freedom.
This initiative represents a critical moment in Argentina’s foreign policy, with the potential for significant impacts on diplomatic relations across the region. The Isaac Accords not only aim to enhance cooperation but also signal a broader aspiration for Argentina to play a pivotal role in fostering ties between Israel and Latin America.
