Jamestown Dollars for Scholars has announced the creation of the annual Ethan Igl Memorial Scholarship, aimed at supporting a graduating senior from Jamestown High School or Jamestown-BJA. This scholarship, which will provide $1,000 each year, is intended for students who wish to pursue post-secondary education in engineering, science, or music.
The initiative was made possible through a generous contribution of $20,000 from Ethan’s parents, Larry and Amy Igl, along with support from family, friends, and the community. “Ethan lived his high school years to the fullest,” his parents stated. “He loved learning, competing, making music, and building friendships. To honor his memory, we are establishing a scholarship that will help graduating seniors for many years to come.”
A Tribute to a Vibrant Life
Ethan Igl, who graduated from Jamestown High School in 2023, was deeply involved in various extracurricular activities. He participated in cross-country, swimming, and track, serving as team captain for both the cross-country and swimming teams. In addition to his athletic achievements, Ethan was passionate about music, playing the trombone and piano, and actively participating in the high school jazz band and marching band. He earned the role of drum major during his junior year.
Academically, Ethan was a member of the National Honor Society and the Science Olympiad team. He was also a dedicated Boy Scout from a young age, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout during his senior year. After high school, Ethan enrolled at Iowa State University to study electrical engineering.
Community Impact and Future Aspirations
Tragically, Ethan passed away on September 3, 2024, after an eight-month battle with cancer, at the age of 19. His legacy will continue through the scholarship, which aims to assist future students in their educational endeavors.
Accepting the scholarship on behalf of Jamestown Dollars for Scholars was DeAnn Ament, chapter president. “We are grateful for this generous gift from Ethan’s family and friends,” Ament expressed. “Endowing a scholarship provides a lasting tribute to their much-loved son and brother and assists future high school graduates with their post-secondary education expenses.”
The establishment of the Ethan Igl Memorial Scholarship reflects not only the community’s love for Ethan but also a commitment to nurturing the potential of future generations. As it stands, this scholarship will serve as a beacon of hope and encouragement for students pursuing their dreams in engineering, science, and music.
