During the holiday season, Altru Health System in Grand Forks goes above and beyond to create a supportive environment for patients and caregivers. Altru staff members engage in special events, decorate the facility, and enhance patient care to make the hospital feel more like a home away from home.
Courtney Caron, an Altru Case Manager, noted that the hospital’s atmosphere transforms during this period. With many individuals spending the holidays in health care facilities, extra efforts are crucial to brighten their experience. “The hospital probably isn’t where you intended on spending your holidays,” Caron remarked. “So we do everything that we can to make it feel special.”
A team of hundreds at Altru works tirelessly to ensure that patients receive the necessary care, even during a time when many people associate the holiday season with relaxation and family gatherings. Kortney Clarke, an intensive care unit nurse, highlighted the dedication of her colleagues, stating, “Everyone wants to be home with their family on the holidays, but when we’re here, we work really well to make sure that all of us are taken care of — our patients, our employees.”
Festive Initiatives to Lift Spirits
To foster a festive spirit, Altru hosts various events aimed at both patients and staff. In November, the hospital organizes a food drive to support patients who may be in need. Over the Thanksgiving period, a tree is set up for staff and patients to share what they are thankful for, allowing for personal expression during a challenging time.
Additionally, Altru conducts an “adopt-a-family” initiative, where departments donate gifts to brighten the holidays for families facing hardships. A candlelight memorial service is also held for families who have experienced the loss of a child, providing a moment of reflection and support during the holidays.
Altru’s commitment to creating a warm atmosphere extends beyond patients. Staff members often swap shifts to allow their colleagues time off during the holidays, and they participate in a department-wide potluck during Thanksgiving. “We work really well with each other. We do support staff to ensure that everyone kind of gets work-life balance,” Caron explained.
Clarke also emphasized the importance of planning holiday schedules well in advance to ensure that the same staff members are not consistently working on major holidays. This effort helps maintain morale and balance for the team.
Recognizing Commitment and Sacrifice
According to Ken Hanson, Senior Marketing and Communications Specialist at Altru, holiday premiums are provided to staff members working during these significant times. “In health care, patient needs don’t pause for holidays, and staffing is critical every day of the year,” Hanson stated. “Working on a holiday means time away from family traditions and personal rest. Our holiday premium acknowledges that sacrifice and commitment of our team to serving patients, even on days of national or cultural significance.”
While the holiday season may bring additional challenges, the unwavering commitment to patient care remains a core value for Altru staff throughout the year. Caron proudly stated, “At Altru, helping our patients and caring for our community is really who we are, and I think that this shines even brighter during the holiday season.”
Through their dedication and innovative initiatives, Altru Health System continues to create a supportive and festive environment for both patients and staff, proving that compassion and care are at the heart of their mission.
