UPDATE: The 132nd Annual Allen County Fair concluded with a spectacular showcase of community spirit and agricultural excellence on Sunday evening in Iola, Kansas. The event drew thousands to Riverside Park, where families enjoyed thrilling games, stunning animal exhibits, and live performances that captivated fairgoers throughout the weekend.
This year’s fair featured an impressive 4-H and FFA Livestock Auction, where Kyser Nemecek’s grand champion steer sold for a remarkable $6,750. This significant bid underscores the dedication and hard work of local youth involved in agriculture, making the event not just a fun outing but a pivotal moment for young exhibitors.
Throughout the fair, attendees were treated to a variety of activities, including live music performances. Notably, John Depew, a champion mandolin player, entertained crowds on Friday and Saturday, providing a joyous soundtrack to the festivities. The fair also highlighted traditional crafts, with Nathan Jenkins demonstrating heritage basketmaking and spoon carving, bringing the art of Bodging to life for visitors.
In addition to the livestock auction, the fair showcased an array of 4-H exhibitors and their projects, allowing families to celebrate the achievements of their children. The Iola Register captured these moments, and a special magazine commemorating the hard work of the 4-H’ers will be available on newsstands starting August 23.
“Each year, the Allen County Fair brings our community together, showcasing the incredible talents of our youth and the richness of our local culture,” said one fair organizer. This sentiment was echoed by many as they reflected on the memories created during this year’s event.
As the dust settles on this year’s fair, local residents are already looking forward to next year’s festivities, eager to see how the community will top this year’s success. The Allen County Fair remains a vital celebration of agriculture, artistry, and the communal spirit, making it a cornerstone of Iola’s summer activities.
