URGENT UPDATE: A 17-year-old girl tragically fell approximately 30 metres (about 100 feet) to her death at the popular Moffat Beach lookout in Queensland just before sunset. The incident occurred around 6:40 PM as she attempted to take a photo with friends.

Witnesses report that the girl and her friends were enjoying the stunning sunset when they decided to move to a better vantage point. In a shocking turn of events, she climbed over a safety fence and slipped, plummeting down the cliff. Her friends could only watch in horror as she fell onto the rocks below.

Detective Peter Hocken from Queensland Police confirmed the tragic circumstances, stating, “[She] slipped and fell 30 meters onto the rocks below.” Despite the immediate arrival of emergency services, the girl succumbed to severe head injuries at the scene.

The situation was further complicated by the treacherous terrain, which posed challenges for emergency responders. Firefighters struggled to navigate the rocky ground, with some slipping during their efforts to reach her. Off-duty medical professionals, who happened to be present, attempted to provide assistance but were unable to save her.

“We are heartbroken over this loss, especially at this time of year just before Christmas,” said Detective Hocken. The incident stirred distress among onlookers, including a woman who sustained minor injuries while trying to help the teenager.

Authorities had previously posted multiple warnings at the lookout urging visitors to stay behind safety barriers. “Please respect the barriers in place, especially during this busy season,” urged Ryan Dubyk from Queensland Fire and Rescue. These warnings highlight the ongoing concern for safety at this popular tourist destination.

In a concerning trend, this is not the first fatal accident at high-traffic lookout spots in Queensland. In 2021, a 58-year-old mother fell to her death at Windin Falls in Cairns, highlighting the dangers of climbing on unmarked paths or over safety barriers.

A report will be prepared for the coroner to investigate whether the safety warnings were adequate and if further improvements are necessary to prevent such tragedies in the future.

As this story develops, the focus remains on the impact of this heartbreaking incident on the victim’s family and friends, as well as the wider community. The lookout, known for its breathtaking views of Moffat Beach and the Coral Sea, will likely see increased scrutiny regarding safety measures in the coming days.
